Sexual assault charge added to child porn possession charge

TEXARKANA, Texas - A charge of aggravated sexual assault of a child has been added to a charge of child pornography possession filed against a Bowie County man last month.

Shawn Michael Owen, 36, came to the attention of New Boston, Texas, police last month after they were contacted by the parents of a 6-year-old girl, according to a probable cause affidavit. The parents told investigators that a girlfriend of Owen contacted them and showed them the video after finding it on a phone Owen allegedly claimed no longer worked.

The video filmed in December is just over eight minutes long and allegedly depicts the child nude while engaged in sexually explicit conduct. According to the affidavit, a man's voice can be heard in the video and a the man's hand can be seen touching the child.

Investigators quickly charged Owen with possession of child pornography in connection with the video. The girl allegedly depicted in the video was interviewed March 31 at the Texarkana Children's Advocacy Center and allegedly described multiple instances of sexual abuse by Owen beginning when she was age 5.

Owen's bail on the pornography charge is set at $50,000. Bail on the sexual assault charge is set at $150,000.

If convicted of possession of child pornography, Owen faces two to ten years in prison. If found guilty of aggravated sexual assault of a child he faces five to 99 years or life in prison.

Owen is being held in the Bowie County jail.
