TEXARKANA, Texas - Texarkana College's Mobile Enrollment Center completed its July tour, returning to its campus home Saturday. The tour, complete with a bounce house, hot dogs, snow cones and more, offered opportunities for non-traditional students to learn their options in financing their education.

"Our non-traditional students have complications beyond the traditional students," said Addison Hill, student recruiter. "They likely have graduated from high school, but did not go directly to school after that. They may be working. They may have families already. Further, they may be making too much money which puts some of the more traditional grants out of reach. But they do have options and that's why we are here."

TC's counselors seek to inform prospective students of, among other things, the new scholarship, called the Just Start Scholarship.

"For those who can't get FAFSA, or our usual "for needs" scholarships, this offers aid to them" she said. "We are here to help them learn their options and get started in the application process. Once they know how they want to go forward, after us, they go talk to our counselors and complete their enrollment."

Several students were taking advantage of this service Saturday. Kaylee Gerth is quite the non-traditional student. Being very much focused on what she wants to do and having a definite vision, she took dual credit courses in her high school years and is using her summer at TC to propel her further, faster on her matriculation course.

"I'm taking sign language classes this summer," she said. "TC offers those, though they don't have a degree in it. I'm just getting some credits in, after which I will transfer them to where I'm going to school in Tyler."
