Man arrested for allegedly giving gun to 13-year-old prior to shooting

TEXARKANA, Texas - A 17-year-old suspect has been arrested on a charge of making a firearm accessible to a child after a 13-year-old allegedly shot his girlfriend in the arm.

Rickalon Young, 17, is in the Bi-State jail, according to the Texarkana, Texas, Police Department. His bail is set at $15,000.

Detective Cliff Harris was assigned to investigate the shooting that happened in January at a house on Apache Trail. The 13-year-old had told police the shooting occurred when he accidentally dropped the gun on the floor.

Harris determined the shooting could have not occurred that way because evidence suggested the boy had to have been pointing the gun at the girl when it went off. The 13-year-old was arrested for aggravated assault.

As Harris continued to investigate the shooting, he learned Young had brought the gun to the house and given it to the boy just minutes before the shooting.

The girl was treated at a local hospital for her injury.
