TEXARKANA, Texas - Sunny summer Saturdays bring out scintillating classic cars and this Saturday was no exception. The stage was set at Fat Daddy's Garage, a local car shop that specializes in classic cars, especially muscle cars from the '60s and '70s, though they have the expertise to take on cars from other eras.
This was not the first car show at Fat Daddy's, nor their first show that took place around a benefit event, but this one was personal for the shop foreman, Scott Churchwell.
"The family recently lost my nephew, Brian Churchwell," he said. "All the bills have been taken care of, but we wanted to raise some money to help the family purchase a headstone."
Kaelee Fay was the host and organizer for the event. A professional event organizer, this is the third one she has organized at Fat Daddy's Garage.
"Given what was going on with the Churchwell family, we all thought that this was one way we could help out," she said.
The event brought out the classic car fans and those who wanted to help. Daniel Plunkett of Texarkana, Texas, brought out a 1927 Chevrolet pickup truck as well as a more modern 2005 Chevy SSR. The later vehicle was not exactly classic, but its lines evoked such nostalgia.
"These are my Dad's cars," he said. "I have some of my own, but brought along his today. And that's what car shows, the classic car community is about. You get to know them, they become family."
Penny Tyrone was astride her Harley Davidson trike, Roxy. She acknowledged Harley trikes are not as common as the motorcycles, but says they are gaining more attention in the community.
"I do lots of local shows, motorcycle events, Toys for Tots," she said. "Roxy and I ride to lots of them. It's my heart, my life."
