May the road rise up to meet you. Well, maybe that's too poetic for a pile of scraped off and old asphalt. But the road around the downtown federal building and post office is coming up as part of the Courthouse Square Connections Project. If you look closely at the construction strata below the road you can see at least four levels. A red layer of clay. A layer of concrete with stones in it. A layer of brick and a layer of asphalt. Possibly more. Currently traffic is being detoured away from the construction site, as it has been since Wednesday. The plan is to rebuild the road, salvage and reuse some of the original bricks, reclaim the lost heritage. It will look much better when it is done and when not viewed at ground level.
