Gibson Lane bridge and roundabout delayed; Project, however, is near completion

TEXARKANA, Texas - Though this year's rainy weather has caused some delays, construction of a bridge over Wagner Creek connecting opposite dead ends of Gibson Lane, as well as a traffic roundabout at Gibson and University Avenue, are on track to be completed this fall.

The bridge is about 90% done, with its substructure and pavement decking poured, Public Works Director Dustin Henslee said. Completion of the roundabout was delayed by "a few utility issues around the existing intersection," but those have been worked out and the project is nearly done, he said.

"Every time for a while they'd get ahead, and it would rain a day and then set you back for another week. Everybody fought that battle this year," he said.

The bridge will create a continuous east-west traffic corridor north of Interstate 30, where new development in the city is concentrated.

In March 2020, the City Council awarded a $6.5 million contract for the project to East Texas Bridge of Longview, Texas. The Council also authorized paying CenterPoint Energy more than $57,000 to relocate gas lines as part of construction.

The contract was planned for in that year's city budget, part of a bond package that will also fund building a new fire station in the same area.
