Charles "Charley" Martz, age 83, of Leary, Texas, died Sunday, September 29, 2019, at his residence. Mr. Martz was born July 15, 1936, in Kansas City, Missouri. He was a veteran of the United States Air Force, and served in the Korean War while stationed in Japan. Before joining the Air Force, Charley graduated Adrian High School in 1954. He grew up on a farm working in his family's grocery and feed store. They used to clean out the feed area several times a year and everyone would gather there for a wonderful square dance! Charley apprenticed under a local welder in Harrisonville, Missouri to eventually own and operate his own welding shop, building and designing gooseneck trailers and a gun shop in Adrian, Missouri before moving to Texarkana, Texas in 1978. "Charley's Place" located in Leary, Texas was a business and home for 35 years. Known as "Charley" to his friends, Charley's Place operated as a gun shop, a consignment store, small engine repair as well as a place to gather and swap stories with old friends. He was also a member of Victory City Baptist Church. Charley was preceded in death by his wife, Dorothy Martz. Survivors include his daughter and son-in-law, Janice and Doug McKaig; one granddaughter, Jessica Angel; three great-grandchildren, Kaitlyn Angel, Jacie Angel and Connor George; one grandson, Lee Angel; one brother, James Martz as well as friends, too many to count. Funeral services will be at 2 pm Wednesday, October 9, 2019, at Chapelwood Funeral Home. Burial will follow in Chapelwood Memorial Gardens. Visitation will be from 12:00-2:00 PM Wednesday prior to the service.
