Johnny Allen Green, 76, of Hooks, Texas, passed away on Tuesday, February 11, 2020. He was born in Hooks, Texas on December 3, 1943 and was a 1962 graduate of Hooks High School. Following graduation, he began working at the Texarkana Gazette as beat reporter. After a short stint with the Shreveport Times, he returned to the Gazette as Sports Director. He retired from the Gazette 48 years later in 2011. He was a long-time member of the Texas Writers Association, the Associated Press Sports Editors Association, two-time Texarkana Gazette Employee of the Year and once a Palmer Newspapers Employee of the Year. He was inducted into the Fox Sports Fan-Fest Hall of Fame in 2015 and upon his retirement in 2011, the mayor proclaimed July 11th as "Johnny Green Day". Additionally, TISD funds a scholarship for a student pursuing a sports writing career in his honor. Johnny knew and loved all sports, but his devotion to the Chicago White Sox and area high school teams always came out on top. He was preceded in death by his parents, Henry and Rabie Green, 2 sisters, Jean and Gloria, and brother, Billy. He is survived by his wife of 55 years, Karen, 2 sons and daughters-in-law, Jeff and Amy Green of Texarkana, Texas and Todd and Dawn Green of McKinney, Texas, one daughter and son-in-law, Lori and Jake Hambleton of Texarkana, Arkansas, one brother, Bobby, of Longview, Texas; eleven grandchildren and five great grandchildren and numerous other relatives and friends. Visitation is scheduled Friday, February 14, from 5-7 PM at Chapelwood Funeral Home. Graveside service is scheduled for 1PM Saturday at Chapelwood.
