Karen Bates Kirkland, age 65, of Atlanta, Texas, went to be with Lord, Thursday, January 23, 2020, at her home. Karen was born February 12, 1954, in Atlanta, Texas, to Jack and Margaret Bates. She worked twenty two years for Howard Carney as a legal assistant and for the Atlanta ISD for nineteen years as an Administrative Assistant. Karen was a lifelong member of First Baptist Church, Atlanta, loved the Atlanta Rabbits, Texas Longhorns, Dallas Cowboys, and animals. She was a devoted mother and loved being "Meme" to her precious grandchild. She was preceded in death by her parents. She is survived by her daughter, Kristina Miller and husband Nick and their daughter, Kassady of Atlanta, Texas; sister, Jan Sansom and husband Bob of Longview, Texas; nephews, Blake Sansom of Longview, Texas, Garrett Sansom and wife Hannah of Ft. Worth, Texas; nieces, Meg Pierson and husband Jeff and their children Luke and Lizzie of Longview, Texas, Ashley Lindley and husband Justin and their children, Jack, Hope and Mia of Tyler, Texas; special family friend, Caleb Coleman; and a number of other friends and relatives. The family would like to give a special thank you to the City of Atlanta, Hanner Funeral Service, and Curt and Kendra Bates. Services will be 2:00 pm, Sunday, January 26, 2020, at First Baptist Church, Atlanta, under the direction of Hanner Funeral Service, with Bro. Wes Mills officiating. The family will receive guests from 4:00 to 5:30, following the service, in the fellowship hall of First Baptist Church, Atlanta, Texas. Interment will be in Pine Crest Cemetery.
