Ruth Edna Jones Hicks was born July 10, 1939 to Jesse Erchant Jones and Eva Mae Carlton Jones of Emmet Arkansas. She was preceded in death by her husband of 55 years, Clovis Jackson Hicks, her parents, and her in-laws William and Minnie Hicks of Cove Arkansas, a brother Jesse Royce (Pete) Jones, two brothers-in-law Bill Long of League City Texas and Buddy McKamie of Emmet Arkansas, a niece Laura Janine Long of League City Texas, and a nephew Gregory Lane Jones of Emmet Arkansas. She is survived by her two daughters and sons-in-law Stephanie Michelle Birtcher (Todd), and Ruth Niccole (Nicci) Robertson (Mark), three grandchildren Amy Lea Robertson Leggitt (Josh), Michaela Ruth Robertson (special friend Michael Pizzo), and Jackson Oliver Birtcher, one great grandchild Olivia Niccole Leggitt, four sisters Shirley Mae Joslin (Bobby) of Haynesville Louisiana, Lora La Juan Thompson of Hope Arkansas, Katie Sue Long of Texarkana Texas, Margaret Carol McKamie of Emmet Arkansas, one sister-in-law Mary Jones of Emmet Arkansas, and many special nieces and nephews. Ruth graduated from Laneburg High School and attended Southern State College where she met the love of her life, Clovis Jackson Hicks, an agri-business major. After graduating with a degree in elementary education, she and Clovis married in December 1960. Ruth taught first and second grades in Emmet Arkansas then started a kindergarten program with Mary Helen Hollis sponsored by Unity Baptist Church. Ruth also taught her beloved five year olds at Spring Hill Arkansas Public Schools. She taught for over thirty years and was loved by many of her students. Ruth was a member of Unity Baptist Church in Hope Arkansas for around fifty years. Over the years she served as a children's Sunday School teacher, vacation bible school director, ladies auxiliary teacher, junior children's choir director and youth sponsor. Ruth loved to praise and honor her Lord through her singing and was a member of the choir at Unity. A creative soul, Ruth was also a talented writer and wrote many poems and short stories. She was a member of the Hope Friday Music Club. Ruth had a sharp wit and was fond of telling humorous stories and loved laughter. She was a caring wife, mother, sister, and friend. She went to be with the Lord on January 13th, 2021. Now that her home is heaven, she will be greatly missed on earth. Graveside services will be held Saturday, January 16, 2021 at 2:00pm for immediate family only in Memory Gardens Cemetery with Bro. Mike Puckett and Bro.
