HARRIETTE McGARY

Harriette Odom McGary, age 76, beloved wife, mother, grandmother, and sister went home to be with the LORD on January 27, 2022. She was born in Texarkana and relocated with her family living in Mannheim and Nuremberg, Germany and at different Army bases in the United States. She graduated in the Class of 1963 from Dunbar High School. After graduation, Harriette earned an Associate degree from Texarkana College. She later earned a Bachelor’s degree from Texas A&M University – Texarkana. Harriette worked more than 10 years at Lone Star and retired from Red River Army Depot after 20 years of service. She later reentered the workforce for a few years at the University of Arkansas Medical Sciences Area Health Education Center. She could usually be found, with her husband, supporting their kids and grandkids in various sporting events. They traveled across the United States and even to Canada watching them play. She was a huge supporter of Liberty-Eylau band and athletics and loved watching the Dallas Cowboys. She was a member of Sunset Baptist Church, Sophisticates Social & Civic Club, Dunbar Alumni, and served as a Bowie County election official. Harriette leaves a loving family to cherish her memories: children, Alicia McGary Coleman, Jerome McGary, Jr. (Charlotte), Valerie McGary Ray (Charles), Christopher McGary (Shaunda); eighteen grandchildren; four great-grandchildren; sisters, Bettye Dorsey, Jacqueline Casteel, Georgia Odom; and many special family members and friends. Harriette was predeceased by her husband, Jerome McGary, Sr.; parents, George and Mary Odom; and son-in-law, Gary “Maxwell” Coleman. Visitation for friends and family is Thursday, February 3 at Haynes Mortuary from 5 to 7 pm. Funeral services will be held at Sunset Baptist Church on Friday, February 4 at High Noon followed by burial at Chapelwood Memorial Gardens under the direction of Haynes Mortuary.
