May 15, 1937 – Jan. 30, 2022 The Reverend Doctor Canon Jerry Echols Hill, age 84, of Waxahachie, was born May 15, 1937, in Texarkana, Texas, went to his Lord “Jesus Christ” on Saturday Jan. 30, 2022. Father Jerry Hill recently retired after 50 years of ministry in the Episcopal church, from St. Paul’s Episcopal Church. Father Hill graduated from the Seabury-Western theological seminary in Evanston, Illinois. He began his street ministry for the homeless on the south side of Chicago and eventually moved his family back to Duncanville, Texas. At this time, he co-founded the “Stew Pot” for the homeless at the First Presbyterian Church in downtown Dallas. His ministry grew as he founded the Austin St. Shelter in downtown Dallas where he ministered and championed help for the mentally ill and homeless. He pastored at numerous churches in the Dallas area and founded the groundbreaking for two Episcopal churches in the area, Church of the Good Shepherd in Cedar Hill and St. Paul’s church in Waxahachie. He received numerous awards and accolades for his ministry with the homeless and mentally ill in the State of Texas. Left to cherish his memories is his wife of 61 years Gloria Hill of Waxahachie, Texas; two sons Max Hill and wife Cari, Marty Hill and wife Jennifer; four grandchildren Payton Hill Cleveland and husband Chris, Carli Hill and fiance Brett Smiley, Zach Hill, and Alyssa Hill; three sisters Pat Hubbard and husband Bill, Judy Day and husband Pete, and Linda McCoy. Father Jerry Hill was preceded in death by his sister Dixie Beck, parents Harry and Malva Hill, and brother-in-law Jerry McCoy. A celebration of life will be held on Saturday, Feb. the 5 at 3:00 p.m. at St. Paul’s Episcopal Church in Waxahachie, Texas.
