Sylvester (Syl) Davis Matteson III, 65 years old, passed away Monday, September 5, 2022. Syl was born on April 10, 1957 in Texarkana, Texas to the late Martha and Sylvester Matteson Jr. Syl was an only child but grew with up many cousins and close friends in Foreman, Arkansas. Syl began driving a tractor on the family farm at age 9. Upon high school graduation, he attended The University of Arkansas in Fayetteville. Returning to Foreman, Syl and his father continued to manage the family farm until 1992. He later obtained a degree in electronics and worked in the field until his death. Syl professed his life in Christ at an early age as a faithful member of St. Barnabas Episcopal Church in Foreman, Arkansas. It was at this church that Syl and Janice reconnected. They married at St. Barnabas on February 20, 1993 and lived in Texarkana, Texas. In 2001 they moved to Longview, TX where they are members of Trinity Episcopal Church. By far, college football was Syl’s favorite pastime. Every game day for the Arkansas Razorbacks, everyone knew where Syl was—watching the game. Also, it seemed Syl always had a book in hand. To know Syl was to know he was quick with a smile and laugh. He was preceded in death by his parents Martha Hankins and Sylvester D. Matteson JR. Grandparents, Patti Hopson and William Henry Hankins; Mildred DeLongy and S.D. Matteson SR. Syl leaves his wife of 29 years Janice Stuart Matteson, daughter Emily Matteson Davis, granddaughter Sydney Davis, uncle, Robert C. Matteson and a host of family and friends to cherish his life. Funeral services will be held at St. Barnabas Episcopal Church in Foreman, Arkansas; Saturday, September 10, 2022 at 1:00 p.m; with burial at Dollarhide Cemetery. The Revered Dr. Bill Carroll, Rector of Trinity Episcopal Church in Longview will officiate. The services are under the direction of Radar Funeral Home of Longview and Madden Funeral Home of Ashdown.
