PG girls finish third at tourney

TYLER, Texas-Pleasant Grove took home the third-place trophy in the championship bracket of the Tyler volleyball tournament Saturday.

Blair Smith served in seven winners as the Lady Hawks defeated Lindale 25-15, 25-17. Britton Anderson hammered 10 kills, and Anna Miller made 12 assists.

Anderson had nine service points and eight kills, but PG fell to North Lamar in three sets 22-25, 25-22, 25-13. Smith had 15 digs, and teammate Miller made 17 assists. Nakina Levingston helped out with six kills and eight blocks.

Anderson served in 11 points and put down seven kills as the Hawks defeated Cedar Hill 25-22, 26-24. Smith made nine digs. A total of 32 teams competed at the tournament.

 

Paul Pewitt wins own tourney

OMAHA-NAPLES, Texas-Paul Pewitt went 3-0, including a 25-19, 25-12 win over Pittsburg in the championship game, to win the Paul Pewitt Invitational volleyball tournament.

Peyton Hawkins and Montana Laney served in seven service points with two aces each for the Lady Brahmas. Sallie Sartain also served in seven points for Paul Pewitt with one ace and made nine assists. Madison Vissering made six digs, while Ebbony Cobbins and Brelee Lawings had four kills apiece.

The Brahmas outlasted Chapel Hill in an earlier match, 17-25, 25-22, 26-24 as Sartain served in 16 winners with two aces and made 24 assists. Lawings made 14 digs to go along with five kills, and teammate Cobbins led the team with 15 kills.

Lawings smacked in 11 service points, and Paul Pewitt defeated Como-Pickton 25-10, 25-12. Sartain helped out with 10 service points with two aces and nine assists. Cobbins had eight service points and eight kills, while teammate Kenzie Traylor made seven digs.

Chapel Hill won the third place match over DeKalb 25-15, 25-13. Arkansas High won the consolation match as it defeated Union Hill 17-25, 25-15, 25-13.

 

L-K third in challengers' bracket

HUGHES SPRINGS, Texas-Linden-Kildare went 3-1 in the Hughes Springs volleyball tournament to place third in the challengers' bracket.

MaKayla Martin served in eight points and made 19 digs, Stormie Littlejohn powered down eight kills, and Sierra Johnson had 15 assists as Linden-Kildare defeated Clarksville 25-16, 25-20.

Amaya Savannah served in seven winners, but the Lady Tigers fell to Queen City 25-19, 25-22. Johnson had 10 assists and six digs, while teammate Jaimya Gaston put down nine kills for L-K.

Martin slapped in 14 service points to lead the Tigers over Daingerfield 25-20, 25-16. Skylar Vaughn and Johnson made eight assists each, Gaston had six kills, and Martin made 10 digs.

In the third place game, L-K defeated Clarksville 25-12, 25-14. Johnson served in nine winners and had 14 assists. Littlejohn hammered down 11 kills.

Linden-Kildare hosts Atlanta at 4:30 Tuesday.

Hutchenson eighth at meet

GLADEWATER, Texas-Katie Hutchenson finished eighth for Pleasant Grove's varsity girls in the Union Grove Invitational cross country meet Saturday.

Phoebe Robertson was 55th out of 170 runners for the Lady Hawks. The varsity boys were led by Sam Hacker in 51st place, and teammate Joseph Saldino was 54th.

Delia Tuttlebee finished sixth in the junior high competition for PG. Cade Haak was the top junior high boys runner and finished fifth for the Hawks.

Pleasant Grove cross country travels to the University of Texas-Tyler on Sept. 10 in its next action.
