Pleasant Grove downs 14-4A rival Lady Rabbs in four sets

Pleasant Grove stayed on track after a bump in the road and went on to victory Tuesday.

The Lady Hawks defeated Atlanta, 25-9, 25-22, 22-25, 25-13, at Hawk Gym in a District 14-4A volleyball match.

"I thought we were out of sync," Pleasant Grove head coach Amy Collvins said. "Atlanta did a lot of good things to mess up our offense and defense. There are little things we should have taken advantage, but we slowed down and didn't. I think our passes and sets were good. We could have sped up our offense."

Blair Smith took the server's box with Pleasant Grove up 4-2 in the first set and served seven in a row to give the Hawks an 11-2 lead.

Madeline Haak served with PG up 17-8 and slapped in six points. Two points later, Anna Grace Miller served an ace, and the Hawks claimed the first set.

Atlanta improved its play in a seesaw second set. After Britton Anderson served four consecutive points to give Pleasant Grove an 11-6 lead, the Lady Rabbits battled back to within one, 20-19.

Shevonia Smith hammered down a pair of kills, and teammate Keyona Easter hit in a tip for a winner to pull Atlanta to within two, 24-22. But Macey Adams put a kill down the left baseline on the next point as Pleasant Grove clinched its second set win.

Avery Trotter got the Rabbits off to a good start as she served in an ace and caused two serve receive errors early in the third set. After a Hawk hitting error, Atlanta took a 5-3 edge.

Alecia Garcia took the server's box for the Rabbits with the score tied at 11-all. Garcia smacked in nine points, and Atlanta had a 20-11 lead. During Garcia's flurry, TeShuna Sheppard put down one kill and had two blocks.

PG's Allison Michaelis served four points in a row to inch the Hawks closer, but Atlanta took the third set after a service error.

Anderson had seven straight service points in the fourth set, and Pleasant Grove was up 15-8. The Rabbits battled but could not get any closer to the Hawks. The match ended on an Anderson kill.

Adams had 12 kills for PG (23-5, 2-0), while teammate Anderson put down nine. Haak had 12 blocks, Miller made 23 assists, and Smith made 16 digs. Anderson led the Hawks with 16 service points, while Smith had 12.

Trotter served in three aces and had 17 assists for Atlanta, while teammate Sheppard put down eight kills. Sheppard had six blocks, four solo and two were assisted.

Alyssa Simmons made seven digs, and Garcia slapped in 12 winners for the Rabbits.
