Remember When: There was no Walmart

I am old enough to remember when

There was no Walmart.

I remember at age 6 I wanted a toy at the local Ben Franklin 10-cent store.

It cost 4 cents.

After consideration, my mother bought it. Promptly after payment, while we were still standing at the cash register, the toy broke without any mishandling.

I cried.

My mother asked for a refund because the toy was defective. The old man that owned the store surlily told my mother she had paid for it and it was ours, not his.

So he would not refund money for "our" toy.

Walmart changed that tradition in our town.

It was lots of years later, but I was happy to see that store go out of business.
