Quorum Court OKs funding for Genoa school resource officer

The Quorum Court approved the appropriation ordinance to fund a resource officer for the Genoa School District.

The school district will pay for the officer, but the funds are required to be appropriated through the sheriff's department.

This allows the school district to hire a resource officer to provide security for the Genoa district.

The funds will be paid by the school district but budgeted through the sheriff's department and include:

  • $29,446 for salary
  • $1,200 for overtime pay
  • $2,252 for Social Security matching
  • $4,306 for retirement matching
  • $4,890 for health insurance matching
  • $240 for unemployment compensation

The total will be $42,335

Justice of the Peace Thornton Mitchell questioned if the resource officer had been pre-selected instead of advertising for applicants.

Justice of the Peace Ernest Pender said the school superintendent had selected a person to be considered for the job. But the person declined to seek the job.

Pender said the job is open for applicants.

The Quorum Court also scheduled a finance and budget meeting for noon Thursday and noon Tuesday to review additional budget requests in the county clerk, and the prosecuting attorney's office.

An ordinance establishing procedures for meetings was also approved by the Quorum Court.

The regular meeting remains the same with sessions scheduled for 7 p.m. the third Monday of each month at the Miller County Courthouse.

If a meeting falls on a holiday, the session will be the next day at the same time and place.

On special meetings, the county judge or a majority of elected justices of the peace may call a special meeting with at least 24-hour notice. The notice of special meeting shall specify the subjects, date, time and designated location of the special meeting.

The procedures include six-pages similar to previous county administrations.

Sheriff Jackie Runion introduced himself to the Quorum Court and his Chief Deputy Michael McQuerrey. He said McQuerrey recently retired from the Texarkana, Ark., Police Department and has trained at the FBI Academy and has a master's degree in business.
