Remember When: Church fans preceded air conditioning

I am old enough to remember when funeral home fans were what you used to stay cool in church and at school.

Most churches in southern Missouri where I grew up had no air conditioning or even electric fans.

None of the local churches had electricity.

As a way of advertising, funeral homes provided hand fans with their logo and advertising on them for churches in the area.

When graveside services were conducted in hot weather, the presiding funeral home provided fans for the attendees. The fans were heavy cardboard and had a wooden handle.

These true stories are a weekly column written by Floyd Fenix, a local Texarkana educator and businessman.
