Rapist gets 150 years behind bars

A Pike County, Ark., jury recently sentenced Joshua M. Barrett, 41, of Kirby, Ark., to 150 years in prison for the rape of a young victim, according to Jana Bradford, deputy prosecutor.

The jury found Barrett guilty of six counts of rape. He had been charged in 2017 with the rape of a young victim spanning more than a period of time from 2005 until 2013.

Following the two day trial, the jury returned verdicts of guilty on each of the six counts.

After the sentencing phase of the trial, the jury returned with a term of imprisonment of 25 years in the Arkansas Department of Corrections on each count.

Ninth Circuit Court Judge Tom Cooper sentenced Barrett to 25 years on each count to run consecutive for a total of 150 years in prison.

Under Arkansas law, Barrett must serve 70 percent of his sentence.

Barrett will not be eligible for parole for 105 years.

"The case was emotional for all involved but that the verdict was a just verdict that let the young victim know she was finally believed," said Bradford.

The state was represented by deputy prosecutors Bradford and Erin Hunter.
