L-E board swears in two, hears update on new school project

Liberty-Eylau Independent School District's Board of Trustees swore in two board members during their regular meeting Thursday.

Notary Public Brooke Haugh administered the oath of office to Place 2's James Keeton and Place 1's Scott Bergt, who each ran unopposed in the recent election.

They will serve three-year terms.

The board also elected Keeton to serve as president, Chad Turner as vice president and Christina Walker as secretary.

In other business, the board also heard a construction update from Scott Barnes, project manager with BTC Construction, contractor for the elementary school project.

Barnes said the rock facade on the front entrance will be complete by the end of the week and scaffolding removed so passersby will be able to see the front. Next week, they will begin working on curbs for the parking areas and the gym floor will be placed in about three weeks.

Cabinetry is currently going up in the teacher workrooms, along with ceramic tile walls. Canopies will also soon be placed over the walkways and residual flooring will be completed throughout the school.

Barnes said the cost to date is $12,445,736. The gross maximum price is $17,342,316.

Superintendent Ronnie Thompson gave the enrollment report, which shows total enrollment at the end of April at 2,515. At the end of the 2016-17 school year, enrollment stood at 2,536.

Trustees also approved an annual contract with the Region 8 Service Center for supplementary services during the 2018-19 school year.

The contract is for $74,755 for the district to receive services personnel and administrative services, professional and leadership development, bilingual/ESL programs and video conferencing services.

The board also set summer hours, which will begin Monday, June 4. School offices will be open Monday through Thursday, 7:30 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. and the last Friday off will be Aug. 3. After then, employees will resume the normal work schedule.

The central office and campus offices will be closed Thursday, July 5 and will be a paid holiday for employees who don't receive paid leave for the July 4 holiday.

Members also unanimously approved an audit engagement letter from Thomas and Thomas CPAs for the 2017-18 fiscal year, which ends June 30.
