THS boys and girls undefeated in hoops

Texas High remains undefeated in District 15-5A basketball-both girls and boys.

The Lady Tigers pulled away late in the first half and continued to dominate Lindale during a 74-48 win, and the THS boys had a nip-and-tuck affair until a fourth-quarter outburst put the victory away, 68-49.

 

GIRLS

Texas High 74, Lindale 58

The Lady Tigers overcame a cold shooting start to finish with a 49 percent field goal percentage, and Texas High was never seriously challenged in the second half after taking a 15-point lead into halftime.

THS (19-6, 4-0) converted 33 of 68 shots, forced 19 more turnovers than it committed (36-17) and had four players score in double figures against the Lady Eagles.

Lindale (7-18, 0-4) finished shooting 20 of 46 for a 44 field goal percentage and held a slight 38-31 advantage in rebounds.

Amiya Rone led the Tigers with 14 points and seven rebounds, and Unique McBride, Kerrighan Dunn and Ashanti Northcross contributed 11 points apiece.

Dunn also had six boards for Texas High, which shot 56 percent (19 of 34) in the second half.

The teams locked up and matched blow for blow for much of the first half, Lindale taking a 7-4 lead on Kalaya Pierce's 3-pointer with 3:14 left in the first quarter and THS regaining its early lead on back-to-back layups by Rone in the final minute of the first.

Lindale took an 11-10 lead into the first break. However, with the game knotted at 15 with 5:04 left in the first half, the Tigers rattled off 15 consecutive points to pull away for a commanding 30-15 advantage.

The teams each traded a basket in the final 30 seconds as Texas High took a 32-17 lead into the locker rooms.

The Tigers shot 41 percent in the first half and held an 18-10 advantage in forced turnovers. Seven different THS players scored during the 22-point second quarter.

Shelbie Steen pulled down 11 rebounds and scored 10 points for the Eagles.

Texas High rolled in the junior varsity game, 64-21, with Ashlyn Stiger scoring 17 points and Cashlin Gooden adding nine.

BOYS

Texas High 68, Lindale 49

Senior point guard Kyle Wright and junior center C.J. Kelley put on a two-man show for the home team, and Lindale had no answer for the voracious Tigers.

Texas High (21-6, 2-0) converted 28 of 55 shots for a 51 percentage field goal percentage and dominated the boards, 36-24. The Eagles (19-5, 1-1) were limited to a 38 shooting percentage on 20 of 53 field goals.

Kelley poured in 29 points and grabbed 16 rebounds to lead all players in each category. Wright scored 17 of his 25 points in the first half and drained five 3-pointers during that span.

The teams played the third quarter on near even terms, but THS went on a 10-0 run early in the fourth to seal the victory, going up 58-40 with 4:25 remaining.

Wright drained his fourth 3-pointer of the first quarter at the buzzer to stake the Tigers to a 20-15 lead at the break, and Lindale came back with a trio of treys during an 11-2 run to grab a 26-25 lead with 4:12 left in the first half.

From that point Texas High scored eight consecutive points and went into intermission with a 36-30 lead.

The Tigers held an 18-14 advantage on the glass in the first half and shot 48 percent (14 of 29) from the floor before halftime. The Eagles converted 12 of 29 shots for a 41 shooting percentage.

Jacob Koeshall scored 16 points to lead Lindale, Teigan Edwards added 11 points and 7-foot-1 senior Cody Collinsworth added 10 points for the Eagles, who were outscored by 12 in the final period.
