Downtown Beacon | Sign's lighting a symbol of things to come

It was quite a sight.

Tuesday evening, a large crowd of Texarkana residents turned out for the lighting of the sign on top of the Hotel Grim.

There were plenty of folks braving the chilly temperatures with their phones out and up, filming as white lights sparked new life into the old sign.

And they wasted no time posting those videos to Facebook and other social media sites, sharing the experience with countless others.

The sign's lights went dark with the hotel back in the 1990s. Now as developer Cohen-Esrey starts the restoration and transformation of the hotel into an apartment and retail complex, the lighting spotlights a long-held dream turning into reality.

In a little over a year, the project is expected to be complete and more than 90 apartments will be ready for occupancy. These affordable units will mean more families living and enjoying downtown Texarkana.

That's good for downtown businesses. And it could well mean even more businesses locating in the heart of the Twin Cities.

It may be just a small thing. But the light atop the Grim is just one more sign of a new beginning for downtown Texarkana.
