First annual Miller County road cleanup later this month

TEXARKANA, Ark. - Miller County officials are currently in the process of organizing more then 20 teams to conduct the first annual county-wide road cleanup, slated to take place from 8 a.m. to 11 a.m. June 26.

Presently, county officials have organized at least 20 teams consisting of five people per each team and more are being assembled, said Miller County Judge Cathy Harrison.

"People can also participate in the cleanup individually and everyone will get a T-shirt," she said. "Both adults and kids can participate."

Presently, about 15 of the county's small communities have cleanup project areas. These unincorporated communities with their cleanup project areas include: Ravana, with County Roads 1, 31, 166 and part of 3; Doddridge with County Roads 5, part of 2 and 186; Kiblah with County Roads 192, 30, and 187; Bright Star with County Roads 73, 6, 35, part of 3 and part of 2; Jonesville with County Roads 24 and 7; Fairland with County Roads 9 and 22; Macedonia with County Roads 10 and 14; and Pleasant Hill with County Roads 28 and 66.

Other small communities with designated project areas include: Genoa with County Roads 17, 70 and 266; and finally Boyd with County Roads 306 and part of 10.

Other small communities that might be assigned project areas include Rondo, Mandeville and Homan. Garland City is incorporated.

Trash will be dispose of at nine different dumpster locations at each of the county's volunteer fire departments and residents will be able to dispose of such items as broken furniture and appliances - but no construction material will be allowed.

Harrison said the idea to start such a cleaning project came to her when she was living in Camden, Arkansas, some years go.

"Participants in our cleanup will be able to win door prizes provided by our sponsors and at the end of the three-hour cleanup we will all be gathering at the Miller County Fire Department Training Center near the Ferguson Exit about two miles behind the Rock Store," Harrison said.
