TEXARKANA, Texas -- After two years of construction, the new Texarkana Veterans Administration Clinic in the 5700 block of Summerhill Road will open later this month.

Greg Beck, president of the Texarkana Area Chapter 278 Vietnam Veterans of America, said the clinic will officially open at 8 a.m. Aug. 15.

The 21,000-square-foot building will offer almost twice as much space as the 11,000-square-foot VA Clinic in the 900 block of Realtor Road.

The new building will also feature 27 primary patient care rooms, women's health care and mental health services, in addition to audiology, optometry and lab services. There will also be basic radiology and physical therapy offered.

M.L. James Construction Co. began work on the $5 million building in June 2020.

About 5,000 patients are registered for care at the present clinic, and 1,000 more are anticipated to be added once the new clinic opens. The current VA Clinic logs about 22,000 visits annually, which could double with the new clinic.

The city's original veterans' clinic opened in 1994 on Summerhill Road several blocks south of where the new building is now.
