Arkansas health department warns of phone scam

Call recipients told that they have been exposed to sexually transmitted infection

Arkansans are receiving bogus phone calls informing them that they have been exposed to a sexually transmitted infection, the Arkansas Department of Health reported Thursday.

The calls started March 23 and were brought to ADH's attention on Monday, said Danyelle McNeill, public information officer for the agency.

"They appear to be originating from the local health unit, when they actually are not," McNeill said in an email interview with the Gazette. "These are automated voices, which ADH would not use, and they are sharing false personal health information, which ADH would not do."

McNeill said sheriff's offices, state police and the Arkansas Prosecuting Attorneys Association are investigating the scam.
