EDITORIAL/Election Letters: Deadline looms as primaries approach

The Arkansas and Texas party primary elections are rapidly approaching. Voting on both sides of the state line will be Tuesday, May 24.

A lot of Texarkana-area residents have pretty strong opinions about the candidates and the issues. And many like to express those opinions on this page in our Letters to the Editor section.

That's fine. We invite public comment.

We do want to remind our readers, though, of a long-standing policy of this newspaper. We stop printing Letters to the Editor regarding the election and candidates five days before any election day.

That means the last day we will be printing letters concerning the May 24 election is Thursday, May 19.

Letters are published on a space-available basis. We cannot guarantee all letters will be printed before the cut-off date. So if you wish to have your voice heard about this election, the sooner you get your letter in the better.

Remember a few rules:

n Letters should be limited to 350 words or less.

n All letters must include the writer's name, address and telephone number.

n We don't publish anonymous letters.

n You can only have one letter printed every 60 days.

n Letters may be edited for legal considerations or length.

n We do not print letters from outside our circulation area.

While you are free to give your opinion about candidates and issues, understand that this is not a venue for unsubstantiated allegations of personal or professional misconduct.

You can submit a letter in person at the Gazette office, 101 E. Broad St, Texarkana, Ark., by mail at P.O. Box 621, Texarkana, TX 75504 or emailed to [email protected]. Please do not send email letters as an attachment -- type them in the body of the e-mail -- and do not use all-caps.
