IDABEL, Oklahoma -- McCurtain County District 2 Commissioner Mark Jennings has resigned, according to officials.

Jennings met with Commissioner John Wayne Williams on Wednesday morning to tender his resignation as a result of being heard on an audio recording with others who were making racist, violent comments, said Idabel Mayor Craig Young. Young has called for all five people on the recording to resign.

"I hope to see the others follow so we can start rebuilding. So we can heal," Young said Wednesday.

"Some people made terrible statements, but that's not Idabel, that's not McCurtain County. It's a great community," he said.

Also on Tuesday, the courthouse closed some of it's offices due to threats. The County Commissioner's meeting building near the courthouse is also closed.

On Monday, a large group of citizens called for the resignation of several government officials, including Jennings, Sheriff Kevin Clardy, Police Investigator Alicia Manning, Commissioner Robert Beck and Jail Administrator Larry Hendrix.

The five people were recorded allegedly talking about the possibility of killing two of the local newspaper's reporters. The five people on the recording also allegedly made racist statements in reference to police work.

None of the others have resigned. On Monday night, the Sheriff's Office released a statement claiming the recording was altered.

The recording was made during a meeting in early March.

The recording details discussion on hiring hit men and burying the bodies of two McCurtain County Gazette reporters. The officials also made racially charged statements about current police work and joked about a woman killed in a recent house fire.

Oklahoma Gov. Kevin Stitt has also asked for the resignations of the county officials.
