TEXARKANA, Texas -- Gerontologist and author Tam Cummings will speak at 10 a.m. Tuesday at Cornerstone senior living community.
Cummings, author of "Untangling Alzheimers," will explain how to match specific patient behaviors to the seven stages of dementia, according to a news release from Cornerstone.
This understanding of how damage to the brain at each stage affects mental capabilities and behaviors, as well as how long each stage is estimated to last, is critical in helping medical professionals and family members prepare for the next phase of the disease.
Three out of 10 caregivers die before their loved one, according to the news release. That is an increase from two out of 10 prior to the COVID-19 pandemic.
Cornerstone is a member of Methodist Retirement Communities, a not-for-profit service ministry providing senior housing in Texas for more than 55 years.
