TEXARKANA, Texas -- Liberty-Eylau Independent School District has begun its search for a new superintendent.

Current superintendent Ronnie Thompson submitted his resignation in a board meeting on Feb. 23, with board members subsequently accepting.

Thompson said he is looking forward to the next phase of life, retirement.

"I'll be here until June 30. That gives them time to start planning and preparing for my replacement," Thompson said.

The board met again for a special meeting on Feb. 28 and discussed hiring a new superintendent in a closed session.

The board indicated in a news release that it will be considering opinions of the Texarkana community, LEISD staff, parents and key shareholders of what the profile of the new superintendent should be.

The school district will hold a meeting for staff on March 28 at 4:30 p.m. and another on the same day at 6 p.m. for community members.

The board plans to find a new superintendent by July 1 and has an alternative plan of appointing an interim superintendent if one is not found by that time.
