One dead, several injured after block party shooting in Wynne

WYNNE, Ark. -- One person is dead and at least nine people injured after shots were fired Saturday night at a block party.

Two of the injured people were run over by vehicles at the scene, the Arkansas State Police said in a news release.

The shooting was reported about 10 p.m. near Williams Avenue and Martin Luther King Street.

Varian Campbell, 27, of Wynne, was pronounced dead at an area hospital. Victims were male and female between the ages of 24 and 49.

Paramedics took some of the injured to hospitals in Wynne, Forrest City, Arkansas, and Memphis, Tennessee, which is about 50 miles east of Wynne. Authorities think other injured people were taken to hospitals by private vehicles.

The ASP's Criminal Investigation Division is investigating the incident at the request of Wynne Police Department. Investigators have identified a number of people of interest.

Campbell's body was taken to the Arkansas State Crime Laboratory, where the manner and cause of death will be determined.

The investigation is ongoing.
