These days, many of us take our Internet connection for granted.

We can't imagine life without it. But for others a broadband connection is a luxury -- oner some have to do without. They just can't stretch their income that far.

Help came with the Affordable Connectivity Program, part of the 2021 Infrastructure Investment and Jobs Act. For those who qualified -- about 21 million Americans at last count -- the program paid part of the Internet service bill --from $35 to $75 depending on income and average area cost.

It was a lifeline for many, including older Americans, the disabled, single parents and Native Americans.

We know some folks might see this as just another government giveaway. We disagree. Internet access isn't just about entertainment. It's a way to apply for employment, work from home, pay bills, access health care and records, manage finances and so much more. Especially for those who might have transportation or mobility issues.

But this week recipients got a notice the program will be ending after April. Funding has run out and Congress has not yet reauthorized money for the program.

In our view, the Affordable Connectivity Program is a worthwhile investment. And we urge our elected officials to reauthorize funding.

About 21 million of your fellow Americans are counting on it.
