Hot Springs officer dies after being shot during traffic stop

HOT SPRINGS, Ark. -A police officer has died after being shot while conducting a traffic stop, the Hot Springs Police Department announced in a statement.

Officer Brent Scrimshire died of his injuries at a local hospital after he was shot in the 100 block of Kenwood Street in Hot Springs, a neighborhood southwest of Central and Grand avenues.

Several witnesses reported hearing multiple shots fired, the Hot Springs Sentinel-Record reported.

The suspect was also shot. The suspect's name and condition are not being released at this time, according to the statement.

The investigation has been turned over to state police.

"I would ask that everybody have their thoughts and prayers for our officer at this time, and his family," Cpl. Joey Williams, a spokesman for the Hot Springs Police Department, said during a brief news conference.
