Pen Pals | Impeachment is nothing to celebrate

The U.S. House of Representatives finally sent the articles of impeachment against President Donald Trump to the Senate for trial.

But not before a somewhat vulgar display of glee.

House Speaker Nancy Pelosi signed the resolution sending the articles along on Wednesday - and then handed out specially made souvenir pens emblazoned with her name to those in attendance.

Now, politicians handing out pens after signing official pieces of legislation is nothing new. The president does the same thing.

But it's always been a tradition aligned with a celebration - a successful treaty with another nation, for example, or a new law that is expected to benefit the American people.

And impeachment - while in rare cases it may be necessary - is not something to celebrate.

Pelosi is drawing fire over the incident.

"You know, we thought that she may have some grand strategy for delaying the impeachment trial for 28 days. Maybe, she was just waiting for her special order pens to come in from the factory," U.S. Sen. Tom Cotton, R-Ark., said Thursday on Fox and Friends.

With all that's going on, this is not that big of a deal. The news cycle is short and this too shall pass as the trial gets under way.

Still, it should be remembered as just another example of partisanship gone wrong in Washington and how we live in a time when "gotcha" has replaced governing.
