UIL approves plan for high school sports this fall

The University Interscholastic League announced Tuesday that there will be high school football and volleyball this fall.

For the most part, everything will start normally, except 5A and 6A conferences will be pushed back about a month.

The UIL said it focused the delay on larger schools as many of them are in the state's largest metropolitan areas, which have been hit hardest by the surge of virus cases.

Some school districts are already changing their calendars to delay the start of the academic year, or to begin the year with several weeks of online classes. The Houston school district, the largest in the state, won't meet on campus until mid-October, according to the Associated Press. The announcement said it also anticipates that not all schools will start at the same time and could face disruptions during the season.

"These adjustments reflect the public health situation at this time and the varying numbers of COVID-19 cases across different geographic areas of the state," the UIL said in its announcement.

Conferences 1A-4A will begin football practice on Aug. 3 and can begin season play on Aug. 27, with state championship games slated for Dec. 16-19. Conferences 5A and 6A will begin practice on Sept. 7 and kick off their seasons on Sept. 24, with state championship games sometime in January 2021, according to the UIL website.

Volleyball practices start on the same day as football for respective conferences. However, 1A-4A games are scheduled to begin on Aug. 10 and 5A and 6A will begin on Sept. 14. Nov. 18-21 are the dates set for 1A-4A state championships, while 5A and 6A are set for Dec. 11-12.

The UIL announcement made several changes to the high school basketball season, which states no tournaments or showcases, including regional tournaments, shall be played. There will be a maximum of 27 games and two scrimmages, with no more than four teams meeting for scrimmage purposes at one site.

Tennis and cross-country contests in 5A and 6A can start on Sept. 7, while 1A-4A get the nod for an Aug. 17 start.
