New Boston falls in area round

PITTSBURG, Texas - New Boston met its match on the hardwood against White Oak.

The Lions (14-9) fell to the Roughnecks Thursday night at Jack Arwine Gym at Pittsburg High School in their Class 3A area basketball playoff game, 73-57.

White Oak went on a 6-0 run to begin the fourth quarter and never lost the control of the lead after that.

Kyle Atkinson led New Boston with 16 points and teammate Jamin Powell added 11 points.

Brian Williams contributed 18 points for the Roughnecks.

New Boston was able to tie the game, 40-40, out of the locker rooms on an Angel Recendez corner trey.

Recendez ended the night with five points for the Lions.

Gunner Soles added 12 points for the Roughnecks and teammate Ben Jacyne added four points.

Carson Bower scored seven points to open the second period for White Oak, before Eugene House halted the Roughnecks' offensive run. Bower scored a layup before being fouled and also added the foul shot.

House added three points for the Lions and teammate Malachi Dorsey chipped in six points.

Bower finished with 18 points for White Oak.

Tre Lewis-Colbert scored two consecutive baskets for New Boston, cutting the White Oak lead to a basket with 2:30 left before intermission, 31-29.

Lewis-Colbert ended the game with seven points.

Colton Fears hit a floater as time expired for the Roughnecks, adding to their advantage, 38-35.

There were five lead changes in the opening quarter.

Atkinson drove the baseline for a Lion layup, tying the game, 15-15, while forcing a Roughneck timeout with 2:09 left in the period.

Williams and Landon Anderson added consecutive baskets at the end of the quarter, regaining the lead for White Oak, 19-18.

White Oak will face Tatum or DeKalb in the quarterfinals.
