THS tennis falls short to Kaufman in powerhouse matchup

SULPHUR SPRINGS, Texas - Two highly ranked teams collided head-on and it was Kaufman that outlasted Texas High, 10-9, in a varsity tennis match Saturday on the Sulphur Springs courts.

Kaufman is ranked No. 6 in Class 4A by the Texas Tennis Coaches Association's state poll while Texas High is rated 14th in Class 5A.

"It came down to the last match," said Tiger coach Toby Watson "We were without two of our top three girls, but still almost pulled out the win."

Saturday's TENNIS results:

Boys Singles: 1. William Soyars (THS) won 2-6, 6-2, 11-9; 2. James Thomson (THS) won 7-5, 3-6, 10-6.

Boys Doubles: 1. Soyars/Thomson (THS) won 8-6.

Girls Singles: 1. Maddy Bixler (THS) won 6-1, 6-1; 2. Katherine Sandefur (THS) won 6-2, 6-1; 3. Grace Wilson (THS) won 6-3, 6-0; 4. Caroline Cook (THS) won 6-3, 6-2.

Girls Doubles: 1. Bixler/Sandefur (THS) won 8-0; 2. Wilson/Floyd (THS) won 8-4.

Subvarsity

PG volleyball plays well at Spring Hill tourney

LONGVIEW, Texas - Pleasant Grove won the junior varsity and freshmen divisions of the Spring Hill volleyball tournament.

PG Gold defeated White Oak, 25-15, 25-12, in the JV bracket final. Ellis Miller served nine points for the Lady Hawks.

PG Gold also defeated Lindale, 25-11, and Spring Hill, 25-19, 25-15. Rylie Williams served 13 winners for the Hawks.

PG Black won three matches to capture top honors in the ninth-grade division.

PG Black knocked off Lindale, 25-23, 25-19, with Chloe Oller serving 13 points for the winners. PG Black also beat Kilgore, 25-10, 23-25, 15-7, with Chloe Oller having 17 service points.

PG Black downed Carthage in three sets, 22-25, 25-19, 15-9. Ava Harvey had 10 points for the victors.

TMS splits with Mavs

TEXARKANA, Texas - Texas Middle School split a pair of subvarsity volleyball matches with Marshall at TMS' gymnasium.

Texas won the eighth-grade A match, two games to one. Texarkana won the 25-8, 23-25, 25-14. Sydney Woods served 28 points for the winners.

The Mavericks won the eighth-grade B match, 25-8, 25-23. Elizabeth Dorsey had nine points for TMS.

Texas won the seventh-grade A match, 27-25, 20-25, 26-24. Rayya Brown served 10 winners for the hosts.

Marshall won the seventh-grade B match, 25-21, 25-10. Bella Brush had three points for TMS.

Arkansas wins match

TEXARKANA, Ark. - Arkansas High's Middle School won an eighth-grade volleyball against Taylor, two games to one.

The Lady Backs won the opener, 25-24, lost the second 22-25, and won the third, 15-8.

Jewel Smart and Montana Jones served nine points each for Arkansas.

Football

Hooks, Lions split

HOOKS, Texas - New Boston and Hooks split a pair of middle school football games Thursday night.

The Lions won the eighth grade game, 14-8.

Hooks' Ripken Birdwell had a 20-yard TD pass to Landon Owens. Birdwell added the 2-point conversion.

The host Hornets won the seventh-grade contest, 32-6.

KJ Walls led with winners by having a hand in four touchdowns, including runs of 75 and 65 yards. Walls also hauled in a 70-yard scoring toss from Kavon Stiger, and Walls passed 30 yards to Cason Pessel for a TD.

Walls tacked on three 2-point conversions and Stiger also a pair of 2-point conversions.
