Atlanta's Steven Smith Cruise-In in early June of each year has become as much a social gathering as an opportunity to show antique cars.

The crowds of people who now attend also bring along their folding chairs to sit in the shade and talk. They readily wait in lines to sample the homemade ice cream that is part of the evening's flavor.

Some organizations put up tables to raise funds for their community work. Stores stay open, and Hiram and Main streets downtown are closed to traffic. Mainly, people visit with each other and enjoy meeting again during the memorial event, which is now in its sixth year.

The event has an important reason for being. It is in memory of the late Steven Smith, who was an automotive enthusiast as well as a longtime community leader. He was chosen the town's Man of the Year in 1989. With multiple hobbies, his interests included drag racing, boat racing and amateur radio.

He was also a member in the Racers for Christ organization. Smith lost his life in a racing-related accident in 2016.
