A noisy crowd stirred to excitement by DJ Godfather of local radio station Majic 93.3 made some noise Saturday night as rhythm-and-blues singer Calvin Richardson took to the stage of Texarkana, Arkansas, Convention Center.
Taking his fans into a series of his hits, the crowd at times sang along as they were swept along with the soul music.
In addition, barbecue was served by the plate in the lobby and a merchindise table was set up for Richardson to meet fans after the show. But all this was a stage for a canned food drive to benefit Harvest Regional Food Bank.
"I came up in church, performing in gospel quartets," Richardson said. "I originally was performing in groups when I started singing professionally. My first album was titled 'Country Boy,' reflecting my small-town southern roots. I was in New York City, recording my first album, wearing cowboy hats and it just was part of what inspired the music."
Richardson credits his gospel background for shaping his sound. Further, he is a man of faith and he has taken that with him throughout his carer as well.
"I never leave home without it (my faith)," he said.
"I pray before every show and my faith always keeps me intact."
In addition to his faith, Richardson credits the fans for helping keep him grounded.
"None of this is possible without my fans," he said. "I just appreciate the love and support and our continuing relationship."
Calvin Richardson's new album, released in October of this year, is titled "Gold Dust."
DJ Godfather emceed the occasion Saturday night. A fixture in Texarkana radio for more than 21 years, he now hosts a Saturday morning music show streamed around the world featuring an ecclectic music mix. Saturday night was his one-year anniversary with Majic 93.3.
"Southern soul, down home blues, Louisiana cajun flavor. On Saturday morning, I wake up Texarkana and the world," said DJ Godfather. "I learned my trade from Big Daddy Griff, who taught me. I carry the torch. I keep the local audience abreast of new southern soul. Bridging yesterday to today, with southern soul, music and blues."
