Therapeutic foster families are needed

TEXARKANA, Ark. - The Southwest Arkansas Counseling and Mental Health Center, 2904 Arkansas Blvd., will hold a two-hour open house from noon to 2 p.m. on Jan. 11.

The open house will focus on the need for more therapeutic foster care families here as well as in the Southwest Arkansas region.

Stacy Humphrey, the center's clinical director, said those interested in providing therapeutic foster care to children between the ages two and 18, can come by the center to learn more. Applicants must be at least 21 years old.

"Right now, we are trying to expand our foster home care in this area, because this type of foster care requires a higher degree of juvenile care from a behavior standpoint," Humphrey said. "These children usually have individual counseling provided to them on a weekly basis because their aggressiveness and behavior often causes them to have to be moved from one foster home to another."

Humphrey said that those who provide therapeutic foster will be reimbursed and compensated.

Besides Texarkana, Humphrey said the center has therapeutic foster care families in the Arkansas towns of Hope, De Queen, Lewisville, Ashdown and Nashville.
