TEXARKANA, Ark. - Charges have been downgraded from second-degree murder to manslaughter for an 18-year-old man who is believed to have fatally shot his girlfriend Thursday evening.

Kayden May now faces a manslaughter charge after further investigation into the shooting death of his girlfriend, 18-year-old Abbigayle Thacker, whom he lived with, said Sgt. Kristi Bennett, Texarkana, Arkansas, Police Department spokeswoman.

The charge May was arrested on was downgraded late Friday afternoon.

It was determined that manslaughter is a more appropriate charge after interviews with several parties and consultation with the Prosecuting Attorney's Office, according to TAPD.

Thacker, 18, was found dead in the 200 block of South Mosley Road from a single gunshot wound, said Bennett.

Police responded to the scene of what was initially reported as an accidental shooting about 5:30 p.m. Thursday, she said. Upon arriving, they found Thacker dead at the scene, Bennett said.

The Texarkana, Arkansas, Criminal Investigation Division responded and continued to work the case, which led to May's arrest.

No further arrests are expected, Bennett said.
