TEXARKANA, Texas - A local teen has been arrested after a Friday morning fight that left his girlfriend with brain damage and in critical condition, police said.

Texarkana, Texas, police officers charged Dontavious Haney, 19, with aggravated assault after an initial investigation into the incident that occurred at an apartment in the 1600 block of Peach Street.

When officers arrived at the apartment, they found Haney attempting to perform CPR on the woman, 21, who was lying on the apartment floor.

Upon determining she wasn't breathing, officers took over attempts to resuscitate her until paramedics arrived.

Officers said Haney and the victim had been in an extended argument that morning. At some point, Haney allegedly punched the victim in the face after she reportedly slapped his cellphone out of his hands. The victim reportedly collapsed shortly after being hit.

Haney called 911 when he realized that she wasn't breathing.

Paramedics took the victim to Wadley Regional Medical Center, where they found she sustained life-threatening brain damage.

Following Haney's arrest, police took him to the Bi-State Justice Building Jail, where he faces a charge of aggravated assault causing serious bodily injury. He's being held on a $100,000 bail.
