Texarkana College student injured when gun he is in possession of accidentally discharges on campus

A 31-year-old Texarkana College student was injured Wednesday evening after 40-caliber pistol he did not have a concealed carry license for accidentally discharged in a classroom, an official said.

"Our investigation is still ongoing and charges are pending, " TC Police Chief Stephen Gass said late Wednesday.

The incident occurred about 6:12 p.m. in the CEC building, which is on the northeast corner of the campus, Gass said. The building houses the automotive and vocational programs.

Officers were made aware of the incident but before they arrived on scene, the student was already being taken by a private vehicle to a local hospital where he was treated for a hand wound and released with minor injuries, according to a information released from TC.

While other students and faculty were in the vicinity, class was not in session at the time of the pistol's accidental discharge, Gass said.

No other students were involved, he said.

TC's gun policy is in compliance with Texas' Senate Bill 11, which authorizes possession of a concealed handgun for people who are licensed to carry, Gass said.

The pistol belonged to the student, but he did not have a concealed carry license, Gass said.

Those who do not have a license to carry a concealed weapon are considered to be unlawfully carrying it, he said.
