As Walmart ceases auto service, local garages still serving public

While many businesses have had to make drastic adjustments as a result government efforts to control the spread of COVID-19, auto repair and service outlets are mostly open and operating pretty much as usual.

For example, Gateway Tire & Service Center on Summerhill Road has made a few minor adjustments, but otherwise is carrying on.

"We've put away our popcorn machine and coffee maker we had in our lobby for customers," said Mike Short, manager. "Also, we've closed our public water fountain for now. But we do offer bottled water for customers.

He said they pay attention to things like wiping down countertops after one customer leaves and before another one checks in. "Otherwise, we treat everyone like normal." he said. "Our services and operating hours remain the same. We just are watching what is going on and otherwise operating our business as usual."

Discount Tire on St. Michael Drive is still open, but have modified things a bit.

"We're on our normal operating hours," said Hudson Hatchett.

"If the pandemic gets worse, we may adjust things, but for now, normal schedule.

He said they have stopped doing tire rotations or other more involved procedures for the time being.

"Right now, we are just doing essential services, flats and tire repairs," Hatchett said.

Anderson Automotive at 804 Spruce St. remains open as well, with no plans to close.

"Our hours remain the same," said owner Danny Anderson. "Unless a mandatory shutdown is issued, it will be status quo."

Twin City Collision continues to offer repairs, though its lobby door is locked, manager Colin McIntire said. "We've made a couple of adjustments We are restricting access to the front office. When customers come, we come out to them to make sure they get what they need. Otherwise, we are staying vigilant, keeping hands clean. At this time, our operating hours and services available remain the same."

The Auto Center at Walmart on both sides of town are closed until further notice, associates at each store confirmed. This has happened at all Walmart properties, several business publications have reported.

According to a company representative, Walmart as a company has made a decision to focus on their central business of providing groceries and supplies to their customers, with extra emphasis on store sanitation, until further notice.
