Telford: 44 employees, 30 inmates test positive

NEW BOSTON, Texas - The Texas Department of Criminal Justice reported Tuesday that 30 inmates and 44 employees at the Barry Telford Unit in New Boston have tested positive for COVID-19.

Nine inmate tests are pending at Telford and 39 Telford inmates are currently in medical isolation.

Medical isolation is "for people who are sick and contagious. Isolation is used to separate ill persons who have a communicable disease from those who are healthy," according to TDCJ's website.

The agency reported Tuesday that 777 inmates are in medical restriction.

Medical restriction is "used to separate and restrict the movement of well persons who may have been exposed to a communicable disease to see if they become ill. These people may have been exposed to a disease and do not know it, or they may have the disease but do not show symptoms," TDCJ's site states.

Inmates are counted at the unit in which they are housed and are no longer included in a unit's count if an inmate is moved to a local hospital, another unit or a prison medical facility. Employees who test positive for COVID-19 are included in counts for the counties in which they reside.
