Barry Telford Unit sees medically restricted inmates increase by 89

NEW BOSTON, Texas - The Texas Department of Criminal Justice reported Friday that 75 inmates at the Barry Telford Unit west of here are positive for COVID-19. That number was 72 Wednesday night.

TDCJ updated its website Friday with an interactive map that allows users to look at how COVID-19 is impacting the prison system by unit. The agency reports that 80 inmates are being housed in medical isolation at Telford as of Friday. Isolation is used to separate ill persons who have a communicable disease from those who are healthy.

TDCJ reported Friday that 739 inmates at Telford are in medical restriction which is an increase from the 650 reported Wednesday.

Medical restriction is used to separate and restrict the movement of well persons who may have been exposed to a communicable disease to see if they become ill.

TDCJ reported Friday that there are 25 active cases of COVID-19 currently among staff at the Telford Unit and that 30 additional Telford employees have recovered.
