Roads, bridges could be slick Monday morning

TEXARKANA - Road and street crews are preparing for the potential of adverse weather conditions overnight Sunday and into Monday.

The National Weather Service is predicting Texarkana could receive about an inch of snow between Sunday night and Monday morning. Bridges and roads could be slick Monday morning and drivers should use caution.

The Texarkana, Texas, Public Works Department on Friday prepared the city's sand-spreading truck in case it is needed to provide traction on streets. The city does not have the capability to pretreat streets to prevent icing, Director Dusty Henslee said. Texarkana, Arkansas, Public Works also prepared salt and sand trucks to use as needed.

Travel planning and other tips are available in the TxDOT Safety Guide for Winter Travel.

TXDOT urges drivers to stay home if possible when the roads are bad. If they must drive, they should use the following driving tips.

Slow down. Speed limits are based on normal road and weather conditions, not winter road conditions.

Maintain at least three times the normal following distance on snow or ice.

Use extra caution on bridges, ramps, overpasses and shaded areas as they tend to freeze first.

If your vehicle starts to slide, ease off the gas pedal or brakes, steer into the direction of the skid until you have regained traction. Then, straighten your vehicle.
