TEXARKANA, Texas - 50K Souls of Nash, Texas, teamed up with East Texas Food Bank to add for the first time a second food distribution point for the area's needy. Previously, 50K Souls had been distributing periodically on Saturdays at its West 7th Street location.
The group is distributing out of Border Masonic Lodge at 918 Westlawn Drive every second Thursday.
"Our donations vary every occasion," said Tabitha Johnson of East Texas Food Bank. "Today, each visitor got a bag of mixed fruit, a bag of potatoes and a bag of veggies."
About 200 families were expected Thursday, with a crew of nine volunteers there to load them out.
With the addition of a second distribution day, 50K Souls expects to be able to serve about 650 families a month
Their nine volunteer crew's labor combined with the other donation events will feed about 650 families each month, with this new event added.
"Jennifer Cannon of 50k Souls asked us to do this," said Steve Rogers, volunteer and fire chief for the Nash Fire Department.
He, along with Jimmy Norwood, a board member of the Nash City Council, were part of a detail loading food into the waiting vehicles.
"We're both members of the Sunrise Rotary Club and civic service is what we do," Rogers said. "That's what 50K Souls does and that's just what this event is all about."
