Miller County Judge seeking clarity on using federal funds

TEXARKANA, Ark. - With $8.3 million in U.S. Treasury Department funds at their disposal, Miller County officials will be spending time next month deciding on how best to use the funds.

Miller County Judge Cathy Harrison said she will be attending this year's annual County Judges Association of Arkansas meeting in Jonesboro next month to learn more about how the money, which is being distributed through the American Rescue Funds Act, can be used.

Earlier this month, Miller County Quorum Court members agreed to create a special revenue fund for holding the $8.3 million.

Harrison said she believes the money could potentially be used to add annex space to county departments, or buy existing property, if county offices need future expansion.

She added that the money could also possibly be used to pay hazard income supplements to county departments that conduct round-the-clock operations, or to departments having to take care of emergency situations related to storms or other catastrophic circumstances.

Even though the Treasury Department did release 100 pages of guidelines stipulating what the American Rescue Plan Act money could be used for, county officials are seeking more clarification regarding those guidelines.
