Howard Garrett, affectionately known as Arkie, from Texarkana, Arkansas, born on April 5th 1933, passed away Monday, April 27,2020 in Texarkana, Ark. at the age of He was the fifth and last child of Charley and Lena Mae Garrett. He served in the Navy during the Korean War. He went to the Gulf Coast (Texas City) for many of his working years but after retirement from the Corp of Engineers- Galveston, returned to his hometown of Texarkana to enjoy a more relaxed retirement. In his retirement he enjoyed fishing, raising chickens, going to auctions, gardening and could grow just about anything. He and his brother, Booty, became known around town as the fellows who could grow square watermelons. His dancing abilities were outstanding and even in his 80's he was out shaking a leg every Saturday night at a local dance. He was preceded in death by his wives, Tressa Garrett, and June Garrett, also 3 of his 4 siblings: Jane Choate, Merle Hobbs, and Charles (Booty) Garrett. He is survived by his loving lifetime partner, Lucille Shimpock. Also survived by one sister, Nell Garrett Martinez of Texarkana, and many cousins, nephews and nieces that he loved like his own. Those who would like to view Howard Garrett may visit the funeral home between the hours of 8 am - 7:30 pm on Thursday April 30th. Private family graveside service will be 11:00 A. M. Friday, May 1, 2020 at Rock Springs Cemetery with Rev. Wallace Edgar officiating. Burial will be under the direction of Texarkana Funeral Home, Arkansas.
